Why tooth colored fillings and what is bonding?
Silver amalgam fillings were used to restore teeth for many years. These are metallic black in color, which is easily detected inside the mouth. Sometimes when you have bigger filling it gives an unpleasant look inside your mouth. Tooth colored composite resins are available these days, which are safe, strong and extremely natural in appearance. Due to their ability to bond to the surface of the tooth, restoration has much strength and has less leakage. Also cost is same as that of metal fillings. So isn't it wise to have tooth colored fillings? Bonding: Bonding is simple method to restore chipped, gaped or stained tooth by using various types of composite resins. It can be done in a single appointment that too takes less than an hour. Result is extremely natural looking teeth and beautiful smile.

What are veneers, crowns and for whom?
Veneers are solutions for badly stained, crooked, gapped and chipped teeth. Since veneers can be placed in 2 to 3 appointments it is faster solution for crooked, gapped teeth than that of orthodontics. Veneers are made of porcelain that is placed on the top of front surface of tooth, which easily hide cracks, chip or discoloration. Crown is type of covering or a cap made of porcelain (most often) which covers & strengthen damaged or broken teeth. It can also be used to cover discolored & gapped teeth.

What is a bridge? When to go for it?
Bridge is a most convenient way to replace missing tooth/teeth. Bridge consists of replacement tooth/teeth and two crowns on either side of missing tooth/teeth. Made of porcelain fused to metal, it has good strength, good appearance & more importantly comfortable feel in the mouth. Bridge is the solution for a patient who has missing tooth/teeth with teeth present on either side of missing space & present teeth are healthy enough to be used as supports.

What are dental implants? What will be the procedure? Who should go for it?
Dental implants are substitute teeth roots resembling screws. These screws are usually made of titanium or its alloy, which are inert to human tissues. These screws work as post and crowns are fitted onto it giving a natural look. When there are no teeth present in mouth or missing teeth has no teeth present on either side of missing space, one can go for implant to make restoration of teeth possible. Even if bridging is possible for you and if you prefer implants more than a bridge then you can go for it. Sometimes when dentures stay lose on the mouth no matter what steps are taken, implants can be used as retention supports for dentures also. On the first step, diagnosis is done according to the bone present, age and other factors. When it is found favorable for implant, procedure is carried out in various steps. Roughly we can say that on the first appointment screw type of thing is implanted onto the jawbone under anesthesia. Leave it for healing for 3 to 6 months. Check-ups will be there in between to decide whether it is progressing or not. Once the implant is ready, it acts as firm tooth root substitute, where dentist can place a fabricated crown on it. Once the process is complete, patients do not have to come to the dentist frequently. One has to visit his/her dentist only for the routine check-ups.
